Father’s Being Involved, Inc. (FBI) held its first annual awards program on February 24, 2007 at Narvie J. Harris Traditional Theme School.  Speakers imparting praise, words of wisdom and encouragement at the event included Pastor Eddie Velez of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Minister Randy Reed of World Changers and Captain Eric Jackson, Public Information Officer with the DeKalb County Fire Department.  Several awards were presented to those father’s who went above and beyond furthering the mission of the organization.

Under the enthusiastic leadership of Derrick Verden, President and Carlos Barham, Vice President of Father’s Being Involved-referred to as the FBI; was formed at Narvie J. Harris Traditional Theme School by dedicated fathers and school faculty members who are committed to academic excellence. All of the executive members of the FBI organization are certified Dekalb County School mentors. The FBI promotes discipline, positive mentoring, leadership, spirituality, faith, integrity, honesty and enthusiasm.   The mission of Fathers Being Involved is to establish an overwhelming presence of dedicated fathers in the school setting through positive mentoring, reading, assisting school faculty and other committees with issues concerning our children.

“Our wives, mothers, grandmothers, sisters and aunts have always been actively involved in our children’s education.  Its now our turn (the father’s) to step up to the plate” says Derrick Verden, President.  The 37 plus  member team makes its presence known on the campus and in the hallways of Narvie J. Harris.  The FBI can be seen grooming the grounds, directing traffic at drop off and pick up times, speaking to classes on career day and just being present in the school and available to take on any assigned task as may be requested by the administration.

“Our goal is to duplicate our model in other Dekalb County Schools and beyond”, says Carlos Barham, Vice President.  The overall vision is to create and expand FBI committees throughout the southeast region of the United States.  We like to focus and   stress the importance of positive male role models being involved in our children’s education everyday; which can create the environment for academic excellence in the future.
